The Tony Awards, where red carpet glamour fuses with the best of Broadway actors, singers and dancer. The 2014 Tony Awards were just held on June 8, at Radio City Music Hall in New York, and the stars didn’t disappoint as they posed for the cameras in the highest of fashion, adorned with sparkling jewels.
The Tony Awards, which were originally known as the Antoinette Perry Award for Excellence in Theatre, recognizes the best performance by actors and actresses, the best musical and play, best revival of a musical and play, best director, best original score, best choreography, best scenic design, costume design and lighting, among numerous other technical categories. The Tony Awards are the New York Theatre Industry’s equivalent to the Oscars, Emmy’s and Grammy’s. The awards are presented by the American Theatre Wing and The Broadway League.
The rules for the Tony Awards are set forth in the official document "Rules and Regulations of The American Theatre Wing's Tony Awards", apply only to each specific season, which means that the rules can legally change year to year.
The 2014 Awards contained 24 categories. Some of the winners included Jessie Mueller, Neil Patrick Harris, Audra McDonald, Bryan Cranston, Mark Rylance, Lena Hall. Darko Tresnjak and Kenny Leon. A Gentleman's Guide to Love and Murder won Best Musical.
Awards aren’t just for performers; in 2009 a new award was established, called the Isabelle Stevenson Award. This award recognizes an individual who has made a substantial contribution of volunteered time and effort on behalf of one or more humanitarian, social service or charitable organization. This award went to Rosie O’Donnell in 2014.
Even if acting, singing and dancing aren’t your forte, you can emulate the stars of Broadway by choosing jewels that are inspired by those worn on the red carpet.
