There are so many flowers and so many beautiful poems to express how flowers make us feel. Flowers can leave a lasting impression due to the scent memory they leave behind. It is believed that fragrances impart some of the longest lasting impressions with us and can evoke memories long since dormant when we detect a familiar fragrance. Let’s look at some of the beautiful poems and jewelry inspired by flowers.
Roses- have so many colors, varieties and fragrances. What is not to love? No wonder so many poems play to the majesty of the rose and you can too with these lovely sterling silver earrings from Van Scoy.
A Red, Red Rose by Robert Burns
O my Luve's like a red, red rose That's newly sprung in June; O my Luve's like the melodie That's sweetly played in tune. As fair art thou, my bonnie lass, So deep in luve am I; And I will luve thee still, my dear, Till a' the seas gang dry: Till a' the seas gang dry, my dear, And the rocks melt wi' the sun; I will luve thee still, my dear, While the sands o' life shall run. And fare thee weel, my only Luve, And fare thee weel awhile! And I will come again, my Luve, Tho' it ware ten thousand mile.
Lilies- another amazing flower with a wealth of color and symbolism; there are water lilies, daylilies, tiger lilies, Easter lilies, and Lily of the Valley just to name a few. Here is a beautiful 14k gold lily pendant that will make a dainty addition to any necklace collection. (Excerpt from)
The Lilies Whisper Poetry by Deborah Amar
Each time the wind begins to chime, And end begins to near A whisper of the softest sort Flows gently to the ear The scent and sight enough are great Yet lilies live for more The lilies whisper poetry As none have heard before The lilies whisper to the day That sends the breeze below It touches ground that none can see Where lilies lively grow
Fleur-de-lis- Speaking of lilies did you know the Fleur-de-lis means lily, but is believed to be a stylized iris? As seen here with this 14k yellow-gold brooch from Van Scoy you probably recognize it as the symbol for the New Orlean’s Saints, but the Fleur-de-lis has a long-running history through French heraldry and literature.

Olive- The varieties of olive trees actually produce a wide range of beautiful flowers before producing their fruit. Long since established as symbol of both peace and victory the olive branches were traditionally worn by brides in Greece. Here, with Van Scoy, we have a uniquely beautiful peace ring depicting a dove within the branches of an olive tree. The symbolism of the olive branch is far reaching and in the fall of 2011 the United Nations held a ‘Poetry for Peace’ contest. Here is a lovely submission by Mariam Ibrahim.
Thou Dove With the Olive Branch
Thou who is nor black, nor white, nor pink, nor yellow, nor tanned Thou who is without territory Thou who is without creed Thou who is humanity itself Thou who brings a smile to the sad Thou who could make the living-dead laugh with joy Thou we seek in the East Thou we seek in the West Thou we seek in the South Thou we seek in the North The present though gloomy The future with you is bright The past though moody The future with you is light Thou dove with the olive branch Thou we seek now Thou we seek in our future
